This dinner is an affinity gathering for independent school staff, faculty, and administrators of any racial/ethnic identity who identify as LGBTQ+. Allies who do not identify as LGBTQ+, please note the upcoming annual NYSAIS Sex, Gender and Sexuality Conference at Mohonk, which is open to all.

The NYSAIS Diversity Committee is thrilled to offer this annual space for the LGBTQIA community within independent schools to gather so we can grow from and celebrate each other. We strive to make this space one that can hold multitudes -- as that is so central to how we thrive as a community. We are legion, and we are wide-ranging in our identities and experiences. We are grateful for the differences among us, and the common queerness – a cause for celebration, indeed– that we all share.

Workshop:  Cultivating a Positive View of LGBTQ+ Identities

Ellen D.B. Riggle, PhD, and Sharon S. Rostosky, PhD, will introduce a positive strength-based approach to positive LGBTQ+ identities.  To illustrate this approach, Riggle and Rostosky will draw on themes of positive identity derived from responses of over 1000 LGBTQ+ participants in their research studies.  The themes, presented in A Positive View of LGBTQ: Embracing Identity and Cultivating Well-Being (winner of the American Psychological Association Division 44 Distinguished Book Award for 2012), include positive expressions of gender and sexuality; creating strong and intimate relationships; exploring unique perspectives on empathy, compassion, and social justice; belonging to communities and acting as role models and mentors; and, living an authentic life.  The presentation will include guided reflection, discussion, and interaction among participants.
