Profile

The Washington Market School has been providing an early childhood education for children in Lower Manhattan since 1976.  We are a non-sectarian, independent school welcoming boys and girls from every race, religion, ethnic and economic background.

Our philosophy is grounded in Dr. Maria Montessori’s understanding of the child’s innate sense of self-motivation and curiosity which leads to greater autonomy and self-sufficiency.  We are further guided by the educational values found in the early childhood schools of Reggio Emilia, Italy.  These values help to prepare children for the future by emphasizing creativity through independent and collaborative exploration.  We believe that children are to be nurtured to best develop their intuitive process as well as their capacity for feeling, so as to achieve cognitive, emotional and social growth.

Our curriculum is based on an awareness and sensitive encouragement of key elements of a child’s developmental growth, with a strong emphasis on his or her interaction with the other children and adults in our school community as well as our Lower Manhattan neighborhood.  We encourage a sense of individual and group identity, reinforced by respect for others.  To this end, we revere attachments between caregivers and children, embracing family presence, involvement and participation.
