SELECTING A SCHOOL
On Selecting A School - First Steps

NYSAIS does not recommend schools, because to do so properly one must know the child as well as the school. When we are asked, as we are frequently, what is the "best" school, the answer has to be that the best school is the one which can do the most for a particular child. Since children differ not only in personality but in learning patterns, different schools will be best for different children. It follows that in choosing a school one must begin with a comprehensive knowledge of the child, his or her strengths and needs. A parent who is uncertain of that knowledge will do well to consult an independent counselor who can, through testing and interview, help the parent understand the child better and start the school search on a rational footing.

Under the most favorable circumstances a parent may be able to choose between public schools, religious schools, proprietary schools, home instruction, and independent schools (either day or boarding). To find what schools are available one can look in the yellow pages of the telephone directory and at our school directory where all member schools are listed
