CHOOSING A SCHOOL
Tuition, Fees, And Financial Aid

Given the generally high quality of independent schools and the degree of personal attention afforded, it is not surprising that independent education is expensive. Day school tuitions range from about $15,000 to more than $30,000. Boarding school tuitions averaged more than $34,000. However, no parent should turn away from independent education because it seems out of reach financially. Virtually all schools offer financial aid based on need, and one does not have to be a pauper to qualify.

At the time of the school visit, therefore, one should inquire not only about the financial obligations one will assume but also about the financial aid the school is able to offer. The chances of favorable consideration may be enhanced by early inquiry.

While their tuitions are substantial, independent schools need regularly to supplement that form of income in order to reach the level of excellence to which they all aspire. For that reason they conduct annual giving campaigns, soliciting tax-deductible contributions from parents, alumni, friends, and others. Giving is, of course, voluntary, but one should not be surprised if asked.
