Most of you know of our mission by this point. We want to get every young teacher off to a strong start – from the first day of school. In the course of the last two years, every one of the 150 teachers who have attended the summer program stated on their confidential evaluations that they would recommend the program for other young teachers.
NYSAIS is pleased to offer its Sixth Annual Summer Program in Classroom Management at The Trinity-Pawling School, outside of Poughkeepsie, New York. Specifically designed for independent school teachers relatively new to the profession, the program once again offers a practical intensive in the techniques of classroom management – and more. Running from Thursday afternoon, August 16, through Sunday morning, August 19, the program will once again be led by Richard Eyster and Christine Martin. Together, they have now worked with more than 1,000 teachers from hundreds schools through NYSAIS, AISNE, CAIS, GRAPS, InterSchool, ATIS, Math for America, CEESA (in Zagreb, Croatia), and NAIS.
The investment we make in all new teachers is one of the most significant investments we ever make as school leaders. We all recognize the toll taken – on the community, on students, and on the teachers themselves – when things don’t go well. The summer program is designed to be an eminently practical guide for relatively new teachers. The immersion is intensive and covers solutions for the full range of issues facing them – from difficult classes to difficult parents, from learning differences to critical opening day procedures, from organiza-tion and time management to communicating successfully with every constituency they will face. At the same time, the leaders recognize that this is a summer program, and that much of the value of the experience will arise from the bonding (and eventual networking) among participants. There will be time for recreation and reflection, access to the open acreage of a beautiful school, a beautifully designed menu – and the opportunity to learn in the supportive company of other young teachers.
New teachers will be tested. It is our intention to provide them with the resources they need to pass that test.
The NYSAIS Summer Program in Classroom Management will be held at Trinity-Pawling from late afternoon on Thursday, August 16 through noon on Sunday, August 19. The $995 free per participant, includes all materials, room, and board for the duration of the program. The program generally fills quickly. Spaces are strictly limited, and will be filled on a first-received/first-reserved basis. We warmly encourage you to consider enrolling your most talented young teachers in a program that promises to have a positive, lasting impact on their professional and personal development.

Christine Martin and Richard Eyster are on something of a
mission. They emphatically believe that classroom management is
the most critical determinant of the success and satisfaction of young
teachers. And they believe that effective classroom management
arises from a set of eminently learnable skills. They have each been in
education for more than 30 years, observing and distilling the best
practices from the finest teachers. They have worked with
teachers from scores of schools to share these best practices, and to
help each of them build a comprehensive classroom management skill
set. In addition to this summer residency, they run annual cycles
for young teachers in New York City, and have worked with educators
through the New York State Association of Independent Schools,
Connecticut Association of Independent Schools, Association of
Independent Schools of New England, InterSchool, National Association
of Independent Schools, and Central and Eastern European Schools
Association.
Christine Martin is currently the Director of Learning Skills and
Richard Eyster is the Director of Middle School at the Packer
Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn, New York. They can be reached
at cmartin@packer.edu and reyster@packer.edu. This event is now full! Register only if you would like to be put on the waiting list.
The $995 fee per participant,
includes all materials, room, and board for the duration of the
program. If attendees live close enough to commute, the fee is $845 which includes all meals.
Spaces are strictly limited, and will be filled on a first-received/ first-reserved basis. We warmly encourage you to
consider enrolling your most talented young teachers in a program that
promises to have a positive, lasting impact on their professional and
personal development.
