The Institute for Teaching Diversity and Social Justice is an experiential professional development program open to individuals interested in building more inclusive and affirming classrooms through exploration and development of strategies and skills to effectively navigate diversity issues in independent schools. Anti-bias work provides educators a way to examine and transform their understanding of children’s lives, and also do self-reflective work to understand their own lives more deeply.

The Institute is designed to support educators of all types in their development of racial proficiency, culturally aware pedagogy and intersectionality – the theory of how different types of discrimination interact.

Participants will receive research-based tools and practically-useful resources to increase their capacity to implement anti-bias curriculum and strategies for change within their classroom and school environments. Additionally, each attendee will receive a signed copy of the forthcoming book, Teaching for Diversity and Social Justice, 3rd edition (Routledge), co-authored by Institute co-facilitator Dr. Khyati Joshi.

Dr. Khyati Y. Joshi is an Associate Professor of Education at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Prior to joining the faculty at Fairleigh Dickinson, Dr. Joshi was a Visiting Assistant Professor at the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race at Columbia University, where she taught Asian American Studies and Comparative Ethnic Studies. She also taught in the American Studies program at Princeton University. Dr. Joshi is the author of the book New Roots in America’s Sacred Ground: Religion, Race, and Ethnicity in Indian America (Rutgers University Press, 2006), which was awarded the National Association for Multicultural Education’s 2007 Philip C. Chinn Book Award. She is also a co-editor for the 3rd edition of Teaching for Diversity and Social Justice (Routledge, 2016), in which she has co-authored chapters on Racism and Religion Oppression. Her forthcoming book examines the intersections of race and religion in U.S. history and contemporary social culture.   In 2012, Dr. Joshi was invited to present her research on Hindu American Communities at the White House in Washington, D.C. Dr. Joshi has also presented her research before the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.   Dr. Joshi provides consultation and professional development for educational institutions throughout the United States on topics related to immigrants in schools, race in education, and religion and public schools. Dr. Joshi earned her doctorate in Social Justice Education at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. She received a Masters in Theological Studies from Candler School of Theology at Emory University and a B.A. in Religion from Emory University. She also pursued post-graduate studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and participated in the Summer Seminar for Educators at Yad Vashem, The Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Authority, in Israel.

Ali Michael is the Director of K-12 Consulting and Professional Development at the Center for the Study of Race and Equity in Education at the University of Pennsylvania and the Director of the Race Institute for K-12 Educators. She is the author of Raising Race Questions: Whiteness, Inquiry and Education (Teachers College Press, 2015): a book designed to support teachers in the long term and personal process of understanding the role that race plays in their lives and in their classrooms.  She is also co-editor of Everyday White People Confront Racial and Social Injustice: 15 Stories (2015, Stylus Press). She and her partner, Michael, live in Philadelphia and consider questions of race and education on a daily basis in the raising of their two children.

Shanelle Henry Robinson is the Director of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs at Friends Academy, a nursery through grade 12 independent, Quaker school in Long Island, New York. She works with students, faculty, administrators, parents and board members to provide strategic leadership in the areas of equity, diversity and inclusion throughout the school community. She received her Bachelor of Education degree from Smith College (Northampton, MA) and Master’s degree in Social Justice and Multicultural Education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Prior to coming to Friends Academy, Shanelle served as Vice President of Programs for the American Conference on Diversity, a non-profit human relations organization in New Jersey where she designed and facilitated a wide range of leadership, diversity and social justice trainings for corporations, community and government agencies, schools, colleges and universities. Shanelle is a contributor to the revised edition of the book Reel Diversity, by Brian C. Johnson (Peter Lang, 2015), an instructional resource guide for educators seeking to integrate film into their curriculum content about diversity and social justice. Reel Diversity invites cross-cultural dialogue about films’ mixed messages and how they enforce and reinforce stereotypes and cultural values.
