NYSAIS-Now - Distance Teaching and Learning Series

In response to the current need for teachers to learn and share successful techniques to promote distance learning, NYSAIS has launched a Distance Teaching and Learning Series of eSeminars that focus on the needs of children across the N-12 spectrum. eSeminars in this series are currently free for NYSAIS members. The non-member rate is $50.

Distance Learning for Students with Special Needs

During these uncertain times, it is challenging to find a way to educate students with learning disabilities who are homebound to avoid COVID-19. We, at Maplebrook, have developed a distance learning program that can be adapted to any school who serves students with learning challenges.  Structure for our students is as important as washing their hands.  This is a guide for school leaders to institute a fairly easy distance learning program to help students with learning disabilities maintain and enhance their skills.

Jennifer L. Scully is the Head of School at Maplebrook School, a boarding school for students who learn differently .  She holds a B.A. from SUNY Albany and an M.A. from Fordham University.  Ms. Scully has served as the President of the International Association of Special Education as well as the 9th Biennial Conference Chair.  She has an expertise in the acquisition of social skills in adolescents, building resilience in students and an advocate for character education.  Ms. Scully has spoken at national and international conferences and conducted workshops in social skills, resiliency and character development.  She has published a handbook on the subject for teachers, parents and administrators entitled, The Power of Social Skills in Character Development:  Helping Diverse Learners Succeed.
