EdTech in the World Language Classroom

Yutong Chen (yutong.chen@calhoun.org), The Calhoun School

Target Audience: Teachers of all World Languages, Grades 6-12

The effective use of EdTech tools can greatly enhance student engagement in a language classroom and encourage meaningful interactions among students beyond the classroom. It also helps teachers to keep an organized portfolio of student work and track student progress with powerful data. In this workshop, you will learn new things about various Google tools such as Classroom, Forms, and Slides and interactive media platforms such as EdPuzzle and PearDeck, and many more.

Also, for training listening and speaking skills, there is no lack of interesting media resources available online. Audio and Visual materials such as clips from movies or English songs are more engaging for students. In this workshop, I am going to share different remote learning platforms to help you and your language students achieve more success during this time!

Yutong Chen came to New York City from China in 2012 to pursue an MA in Applied Linguistics at Teachers College. After graduating in 2014, she has been teaching middle school Mandarin at the Calhoun School in NYC. She has been organizing, chaperoning, and leading the language trips to China for 4 years now.

She is a certified Google Educator and has always been interested in EdTech. Outside of her language classroom, she led a "Girls and Boys Who Code" club at Calhoun. She has always believed in the benefits of the effective use of technology in a language classroom. In this difficult time, the benefits of technology are even more outstanding. The involvement of technology and media facilitates language teaching and language learning effectively. Provided that students have access to computers and the internet, reading and the following responding writing task can be done outside of the classroom in the form of an online discussion forum, which saves precious classroom time for more interactive activities and thus creates a more vivid classroom environment.
