Virtual Learning in the Reading and Writing Classroom
Eve Becker and Zachary Kronstat

Target audience: 4th-12th grade English and Humanities teachers, literacy specialists, learning support specialists

In this workshop, Leaf & Pen, the organization that has taken hundreds of NYSAIS members on writing retreats, will facilitate a discussion on how to best serve our student readers and writers, right now.

We will begin by sharing digital methods we have used to keep our students reading, writing and discussing outside of school time, from their own homes. We’ll share what worked, what challenged us, and how we would tweak these tested methods for our current climate. Then, we will open up the conversation, collectively exploring questions like,
  • How can we maintain the inquiry-based literacy classrooms we love during these times?
  • How can we stay connected to each other through reading and writing?
  • How can we continue to center student voice through the screen?
  • What have we already done as professionals that we can adapt to these ends?
This is an initial exploration; as a group, we will decide what kinds of follow-up and support might be helpful, and plan for additional workshop offerings.

Eve Becker has taught English, Humanities and writing in New York City for three decades, to K-12 students and educators. Most recently, she taught middle school English at The School at Columbia University. As founder and director of Leaf and Pen, she leads writing retreats and workshops for both educators and students. Eve was awarded the nationally acclaimed Pushcart Prize for her essay “Final Concert” (Pushcart Prize 2012) and is the author of over thirty published young adult novels. Prior to becoming a teacher, she worked as a freelance writer and editor. She was Editor in Chief of Her Online, and Editorial Director of zoggle.com.

Zachary Kronstat is a secondary English teacher in New York City. He is also a writer of short fiction and poetry. He has presented widely on writing pedagogy, most recently with Leaf and Pen at The 2019 NCTE National Conference. Outside of all those texts, he’s a hopeful Yiddishist, avid skateboarder, lover of long city walks, and eater of all city foods. He completed an M.A. in English Education from Teachers College, Columbia University and a B.A. in Educational Studies, Sociology, and Anthropology at Swarthmore College.
