K-8 teachers: How to Deepen Academic Engagement in Distance Learning Through Arts Integration

Mollie Fox, Head Art Teacher and Art Integration Specialist

The Shefa School

Target Audience: K-8 classroom teachers and  academic subject teachers; art teachers are welcome, too!

Arts integration is an approach to teaching in which students construct and demonstrate understanding through an art form. Content standards are taught and assessed equitably in and through the arts. Students meet dual learning objectives when they engage in the creative process to explore connections between an art form and another subject area to gain greater understanding in both.

Now, as teachers try to meet students where they are through distance learning, student engagement and active enthusiastic participation is needed. With imagination and openness, all academic subject areas can be infused, enhanced, and differentiated with art integration.

Examples and lesson plans will be introduced.

Mollie Fox, a visual artist and teacher, has a bachelor’s degree in Art History and Studio Art from The University of Michigan. She has studied sustainable building construction at the University of Alaska, fashion design at Fashion Institute of Technology, painting and drawing at Betzalel, Hebrew University, as well as School of the Visual Arts. She received her masters degree in Childhood General and Special Education from Bank Street College. She has worked in the arts in many capacities: art consultation and curation, advertising, product/package design, fashion design, and illustration. She has been a lower school classroom general and special education teacher. She continues to teach break-out reading groups for decoding and comprehension. Mollie was brought into The Shefa School to found and head their art department and is consistently collaborating with teachers, learning specialists, and museum professionals to develop arts integrated curriculum across grades.
