Is your head of school search benefitting from all available leadership talent? The 2017, NAIS statistics reveal that only one third of all independent school heads are women and just 7 percent are people of color. To understand the dynamics in the recruiting process that contribute to or hinder the hiring of people of color and White women for headship positions, NAIS launched a study involving search firms, search committees, and potential candidates who are people of color or White women. The study also assessed current independent school administrators’ career aspirations, interest in a headship position, barriers and motivators of the position.
During this eSeminar, NAIS staff will share findings about the recruitment and selection process, the aspirations of women and people of color, and these candidates’ backgrounds and career paths. You’ll also learn about guidelines and strategies to ensure that your school’s next head search attracts a broad and diverse pool of candidates and offers all candidates an equal opportunity.
Caroline Blackwell is Vice President for Equity and Justice at the National Association of Independent Schools. She holds an undergraduate degree in Journalism from the University of Maryland, and a Master’s Degree in Clinical Social Work from Boston University. She is lead facilitator of the NAIS Diversity Leadership Institute, a certified Civil Mediator, and a Qualified Administrator of the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI), and the Intercultural Conflict Style (ICS) Inventory. Ms. Blackwell is also the consulting editor of Diversity Work in Independent Schools, The Practice and the Practitioner (2013), a contributing author to the NAIS Trendbook (2014, 2015, 2016), and to A Guidebook to the NAIS Principles of Good Practice.
Amada Torres is the Vice President of Studies, Insights, and Research at the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). In this capacity, she conducts original research and produces reports on national studies of interest to NAIS schools. As a permanent contributor to the NAIS TrendBook, she regularly speaks on issues related to independent education, trends affecting independent schools, financial sustainability, admissions and marketing, and advocacy. Amada previously worked for the Corporate Executive Board, a membership-based provider of best practices research and analysis in Washington DC, and the Peruvian Ministry of Economy and Finance.
