Teach21 Summer Workshop: The Hidden World of Counting: Operating, Unitizing and Premultiplicative Thinking
The act of counting may seem simple, but it contains powerful mathematics. This workshop will introduce you to the practice of using structured arrangements of objects as a way to elicit from students important mathematical behaviors and mental orientations, from grouping and unitizing, to unit coordination and premultiplicative thinking. You will learn how to use specific prompts to help young students implicitly and explicitly connect the familiar, accessible routine of counting to increasingly complex properties of number and operation. The workshop will also highlight the self-differentiating nature of counting routines and feature practical tips for helping families to integrate powerful counting routines into their home lives.
