Teach21 Summer Workshop: We Are Family: Building a Classroom Community Through Critical Conversations, Picture Books, and Play-Based Learning

Date: Wednesday - June 16, 2021
Time: 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM
Location: Online/virtual
Teach21 is a professional development institute focused on 21st-century teaching and learning. Workshops are developed and taught by faculty and staff of The School at Columbia University, with focus on innovation, integration and technology in a wide array of content areas.

How do we as educators build a classroom community that is affirming, inclusive, and fosters a sense of belonging? Statements that drive our teaching in our elementary classroom are; You matter. You belong. You are safe, and above it all, you are loved. Mattering is essential to learning. In order to provide children with the tools needed to thrive, we must provide them access to critical conversations, and in-depth learning. Together in the workshop, we hope to gather in community and learn from each other ways to best share our authentic selves with students. How do we implement a curriculum that is thoughtful, encouraging, and promotes advocacy for one’s self and others? Through the exploration of picture books, culturally responsive and critical conversations, and creative dramatics, teachers will learn how to facilitate conversation and create supportive space for their students to express, process, and learn with one another that we are far more the same than we are different. We hope to provide them with “windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors,” as an invitation into their own learning journeys.
