Teach21 Summer Workshop: Discovering the Reason in Rational Number: An Hour of Relative Sense-Making

Date: Thursday - June 17, 2021
Time: 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Location: Online/virtual
Teach21 is a professional development institute focused on 21st-century teaching and learning. Workshops are developed and taught by faculty and staff of The School at Columbia University, with focus on innovation, integration and technology in a wide array of content areas.
The world of fractions, percents, decimals, ratios and rates requires students to reason with numbers in an entirely new way—as a relative measure. For instance, while in primary grades the number “2” was one more than 1 and one fewer than 3, in the elementary years, “2” is now also two times the magnitude of 1, half the magnitude of 4, two-thirds of 3, and one-fifth of 10, to name just a handful of its identities. Said differently, besides functioning as a measure of quantity, numbers are now, also, a measure of other numbers! Cool, yes, but potentially overwhelming, too. In this workshop, we will briefly survey the landscape of rational numbers, beginning with the often-underappreciated relationships embedded in “simple” multiplication and division equations, and proceeding to consider topics such as the “local vs. global” values embedded in fraction representation and the five different interpretations/behaviors of rational numbers. The workshop will include concrete exercises and activities that can make rational numbers more accessible, more compelling, and more fun for you and your students.
