Sexual Citizens: Sex, Power, and Assault on Campus

Date: Thursday - October 07, 2021
Time: 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM
Location: Virtual Event

In their book, Sexual Citizens: Sex, Power, and Assault on Campus, authors Jennifer S. Hirsch and Shamus Khan provide an innovative, compassionate, and surprisingly optimistic analysis of why campus sexual assaults happen and – critically – what can be done to prevent them. They argue that families and schools can do more to prevent sexual assault, beginning in elementary school through high school and beyond.

In conversation with Parents League School Advisor, Evie Gurney, co-authors Jennifer Hirsch and Shamus Khan will present their findings from research with Columbia and Barnard undergraduates. Hirsch and Khan take a public health approach to sexual assault; rather than focus on the character or pathologies of assaulters and look at how our communities are organized and why that organization can lead to sexual assault. They present a compelling argument for why prevention work needs to go beyond consent education.

The presentation will be followed with time for Q & A.

Please note: age discretion is advised.
