Assistant Director of Communications -- Full-Time

The Gillen Brewer School, a special needs elementary school on the upper east side of Manhattan, is currently seeking to hire an Assistant Director of Communications to join our growing Administration team.  We are hoping to fill this position immediately with the right candidate.

Summary

The Assistant Director of Communications is a new position to support all communication efforts at the Gillen Brewer School and will partner closely with the Development and Admissions departments. This person will create all communication materials including, but not limited to: general school announcements, updates to current families, the annual impact report, monthly newsletters, community communications, and annual appeals. The Assistant Director will also manage all social media platforms, ensuring all communications are streamlined and coordinated.   

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for all written materials—drafting newsletter content, website language, social media messages, event invitations, and annual impact reports
  • Leads all schoolwide communications and coordinating outreach so communications are streamlined, consistent, and on-brand
  • Takes photographs and video (when appropriate) at school and school functions
  • Actively manages all social media accounts
  • Collaborates with Administration, Development, and Admissions to create and execute strategic plans for branding and advancement, including new collateral, website redesign, and social media
  • Creates and edits fundraising communications, such as acknowledgment templates, campaign collateral, follow-up letters, impact reports, and newsletters 
  • Collects and manages content to be used in fundraising grant proposals by meeting with internal partners and identifying quantitative and qualitative data points
  • Prepares stewardship materials in coordination with the Development Manager
  • Other duties as assigned by the Head of School

Position Requirements

  • A minimum of 5 years of work experience in communications and experience working in a nonprofit setting preferred
  • Experience working collaboratively across various departments
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills are required
  • Is a team player and wants to be part of a growing department
  • Detail-oriented, creative, and takes initiative
  • Strong project management skills and can manage multiple projects at once
  • Strong Microsoft Office and PC proficiency as well as experience using the Google Suite and Adobe Creative Suite are required
  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent
  • Experience in education a plus

Physical Requirements

The work environment consists of exposure to physical conditions typical of an office and school.  Employees must be able to sit at a desk and work on a computer for long periods of time to complete necessary paperwork.  Additionally, employees may also be required to perform activities which include but are not limited to:  walking, standing, climbing up and down stairs, and lifting.  Vision, with or without lenses, must be sufficient to read in both paper and digital formats.  Employees must have the ability to hear, read, write, and speak in English.

Professional Development

The school is a community of learners.  In addition to staff development and training at Gillen Brewer, employees are encouraged to pursue educational goals through conferences and various workshops.  Staff is required to attend all staff development workshops as well as staff, team, and supervision meetings.  Staff is also encouraged to attend all school functions listed on the school calendar.

Evaluation

The Head of School will conduct two formal evaluations a year using this job description as a guide.  Evidence of effectiveness will be collected through observations, surveys, discussions, and data.

Other Requirements

You must be authorized to work in the United States and be willing to undergo a number of clearances, including NYC DOE fingerprinting, a medical health form, and other background checks.
