Gender and Sexuality Diversity: Frameworks, Values, Practice
260 Boardman Road, Poughkeepsie NY 12603 map
For All Grades
Speaker: Jennifer Bryan
The National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) provides explicit guidelines for creating and sustaining inclusive, equitable practice, yet many educational communities are currently grappling with how to best apply these principles to issues of gender and sexuality in the school setting. This session will inspire a shift from aspirational guidelines to actual practice.
Students naturally adopt a range of identities, expressions and roles as they navigate the emotional, social and academic world of school. Regardless of how comfortable or uncomfortable adults are with these issues, gender and sexuality are at the heart of this developmental process for all children of all ages!! As our 21st Century understanding of human diversity expands, PreK-12 educators must be able to engage with issues related to gender and sexuality competently and confidently.
This workshop will focus on the concepts and language with which to create developmentally appropriate practice . Using school mission and the Gender and Sexuality Diversity framework, participants will engage with critical questions about
- human identity development
- ideal conditions for learning
- teaching methods and curriculum design
- policies and programs
Whether you are an 2nd grade teacher, an after-school coordinator, the middle school division head, a basketball coach, school counselor or a dorm parent, this session is relevant to the work you do in your role every day.
NOTE: Participants will be invited to work in small groups based on level of experience. (GSD 101; GSD 201) Everyone should bring a hard copy of your school’s mission statement. If you are in the 201 camp, please bring books, curriculum ideas to share. (Prizes for those who actually remember to bring these!)
