Founded in 2009, Greene Hill School is an independent lower and middle school serving the need of the Fort Greene/Clinton Hill and surrounding Brooklyn communities for affordable and progressive education.
At Greene Hill School…
1) Children are actively engaged in their world through critical thinking and open-ended investigations,
2) Talented teachers provide honed expertise and consistent, thoughtful guidance,
3) Parents are important contributors to the school environment, and
4) The local community is a learning laboratory and a natural extension of the GHS classroom.
The result: GHS students’ intellectual curiosity, educational capabilities, and emotional development flourish in a vibrant learning environment that fosters each student’s understanding of themselves and their relationship to the local community and the world.
Our Commitment to Diversity
Greene Hill School is dedicated to achieving a racially and economically diverse balance of children and families reflecting the Fort Greene/Clinton Hill/Wallabout Brooklyn community. Understanding that tuition is often a barrier to diversity in independent schools, it is the goal of Greene Hill to keep tuition reasonable with a sliding scale based on income. In this way, GHS maintains a learning community that looks to be representative of the rich cultural and socioeconomic community in which we reside.
The idea for Greene Hill School began with a group of Fort Greene and Clinton Hill parents, educators and friends looking for a progressive school with small class sizes for their children. In fall 2009, the first class of eight four- and five-year old children started learning together with the school’s first teacher in a sunlit loft in Clinton Hill. The following year, the school more than doubled in size, sharing space with the Fort Greene Clinton Hill Co-Op preschool. Now in 2014, with 132 students ages four through eleven, Greene Hill School has found our permanent home in a beautiful and spacious building on Adelphi Street in the heart of the Fort Greene and Clinton Hill community.
Greene Hill School is located in the historic Fort Greene/Clinton Hill neighborhoods of Brooklyn, a city which itself has a rich legacy of continued immigration, architectural and industrial achievement, social justice, and creative exploration.
