NYSAIS Membership

Full Member (Voting Members)

A Full Member shall be an independent nursery/kindergarten, elementary, or secondary school elected as such by the Board of Trustees and which:

  • Shall be incorporated as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation;
  • Shall have served as a Provisional Member prior to becoming a Full Member;
  • Shall have been operating as an independent nursery/kindergarten, elementary, or secondary school for at least five (5) years.
  • Shall adhere to NYSAIS criteria of non-discrimination in hiring and admissions; and
  • Shall have been accredited by the NYSAIS Commission on Accreditation

Each Full Member shall be represented by a duly authorized delegate of such school, who shall have one (1) vote. Full Members shall elect the Board of Trustees, and transact other business that may come before it. Full Members shall be provided with legislative services.

Provisional Member (Non-Voting Members)

A Provisional Member shall be an independent nursery/kindergarten, elementary, or secondary school elected as such by the Board of Trustees and which:

  • Shall be incorporated as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation;
  • Can and will meet the standards for full membership and accreditation within five (5) years of its election as a Provisional Member;
  • Shall adhere to NYSAIS criteria of non-discrimination in hiring and admissions; and
  • Shall be subject to visitation from time to time by representatives of the Board of Trustees.

No Provisional Member shall serve as a Provisional Member for longer than five (5) years unless otherwise extended by a majority vote of the Board of Trustees. Provisional Members shall not be entitled to vote. Provisional Members shall be provided with legislative services.

Association Members (Non-Voting Members)

An Association Member shall be a non-profit association concerned with independent school education elected as such by the Board of Trustees. Association Members shall not be entitled to vote and shall not be provided with legislative services.

Associate Members (Non-Voting Members)

An Associate Member shall be an independent educational organization that is not an incorporated not-for-profit, such as a proprietary school, whose standards are neither accredited nor endorsed by NYSAIS, but shall:

  • Be located in the State of New York;
  • Be accredited by an accrediting body acceptable to the NYSAIS Trustees;
  • Adhere to the NYSAIS criteria of non-discrimination in hiring and admissions;
  • Be operated for five (5) consecutive years under the same ownership;
  • Provide NYSAIS with supporting documentation as required;

Associate Members shall not be entitled to vote and shall not be provided with legislative services. All correspondence and marketing materials from the Associate Member that indicates membership in NYSAIS must clearly indicate Associate Member status. Associate Member schools will be so identified by NYSAIS in all NYSAIS marketing such as web-based school search engines. Associate membership is not transferable and associate member schools which change ownership shall be required to re-submit an application for NYSAIS membership. Charter schools shall not be eligible for Associate Member status.

Dues

Dues are assessed annually and are based on the size of a school. Schools that are accredited by NYSAIS are also subject to an annual accreditation fee.  A schedule of current dues and fees is available by request.
